An Asymptotically-Optimal Sampling-Based Algorithm for Bi-directional Motion Planning
Bi-directional search is a widely used strategy to increase the success and
convergence rates of sampling-based motion planning algorithms. Yet, few
results are available that merge both bi-directional search and asymptotic
optimality into existing optimal planners, such as PRM*, RRT*, and FMT*. The
objective of this paper is to fill this gap. Specifically, this paper presents
a bi-directional, sampling-based, asymptotically-optimal algorithm named
Bi-directional FMT* (BFMT*) that extends the Fast Marching Tree (FMT*)
algorithm to bi-directional search while preserving its key properties, chiefly
lazy search and asymptotic optimality through convergence in probability. BFMT*
performs a two-source, lazy dynamic programming recursion over a set of
randomly-drawn samples, correspondingly generating two search trees: one in
cost-to-come space from the initial configuration and another in cost-to-go
space from the goal configuration. Numerical experiments illustrate the
advantages of BFMT* over its unidirectional counterpart, as well as a number of
other state-of-the-art planners.Comment: Accepted to the 2015 IEEE Intelligent Robotics and Systems Conference
in Hamburg, Germany. This submission represents the long version of the
conference manuscript, with additional proof details (Section IV) regarding
the asymptotic optimality of the BFMT* algorith
Exact and approximate analytical solutions for nonlocal nanoplates of arbitrary shapes in bending using the line element-less method
In this study, an innovative procedure is presented for the analysis of the static behavior of plates at the micro and nano scale, with arbitrary shape and various boundary conditions. In this regard, the well-known Eringen’s nonlocal elasticity theory is used to appropriately model small length scale effects. The proposed mesh-free procedure, namely the Line Element-Less Method (LEM), only requires the evaluation of simple line integrals along the plate boundary parametric equation. Further, variations of appropriately introduced functionals eventually lead to a linear system of algebraic equations in terms of the expansion coefficients of the deflection function. Notably, the proposed procedure yields approximate analytical solutions for general shapes and boundary conditions, and even exact solutions for some plate geometries. In addition, several applications are discussed to show the simplicity and applicability of the procedure, and comparison with pertinent data in the literature assesses the accuracy of the proposed approach

Seed morphology and seed coat structure in Mediterranean plants: implication for evolution, taxonomy and germinative performance
A better understanding of morphological, ultra-structural and anatomical seed coat characteristics can contribute to explain and predict seed performance under certain environmental conditions and select the most suitable treatments promoting seed germination. The Seed Banks at the Botanic Gardens of Catania and Palermo (Sicily) are particularly involved in research studies aimed to detect and describe macro- and micro-morphological features of seeds from different plant families and genera, using both light and scanning electron microscopy. These studies mainly aim to 1) recognize and compare inter- and intra-specific variation of seed coat traits, with particular attention on rare and threatened species; 2) evaluate the usefulness of these traits in taxonomic and phylogenetic studies; 3) establish correlations between seed coat structures and seed germination; 4) understand the seed coat adaptive potential and sensitivity to particular ecological conditions and changing environments
Concomitant MPZ and MFN2 Gene Variants and Charcot Marie Tooth Disease in a Boy: Clinical and Genetic Analysis-Literature Review
: Charcot- Marie- Tooth (CMT) disease includes a group of clinically and genetically heterogeneous neuropathic disorders with an estimated frequency of 1 on 2.500 individuals. CMTs are differently classified according to the age of onset, type of inheritance, and type of inheritance plus clinical features. For these disorders, more than 100 genes have been implicated as causal factors, with mutations in the PMP22 being one of the most common. The demyelinating type (CMT1) affects more than 30% of the CMTs patients and manifests with motor and sensory dysfunctions of the peripheral nervous system mainly starting with slow progressive weakness of the lower extremities. We report here a 12 year- old boy presenting with typical features of CMT1 type, hearing impairment, and inguinal hernia who at the next-generation sequence analysis displayed a concomitant presence of two variants: the c.233 C>T p.Ser 78Leu of the MPZ gene (NM_000530.6) characterized as pathogenetic and the c.1403 G>A p.Arg 468His of the MFN2 gene (NM_014874.3) characterized as VUS. Concomitant variant mutations in CMTs have been uncommonly reported. The role of these gene mutations on the clinical expression and a literature review on this topic is discussed
R&I smart specialisation strategies: classification of EU regions’ priorities. Results from automatic text analysis
Building on automatic text analysis, this paper proposes an original categorization of Research and Innovation Smart Specialisation Strategy (RIS3) priorities and provides a common language (with detailed dictionaries) to classify priorities and then to associate EU regions to multiclass categories of priorities. This result is a powerful tool to interpret the current state of diversification across regions, with its potential of complementarities and synergies that might support territorial integrated development paths. It would also support regions in their future strategic programmes on RIS3. A case study on the Alpine macro-region shows innovation development paths to outline macroregion strategic planning
